Pop into the art galleries and pick up a piece of art on Nuuanu Avenue in downtown Honolulu, in Haleiwa on the North Shore or in bustling Waikiki. Make an appointment to visit the private art gallery of resident artists and get a personal glimpse into their artistic drive. Organized by TCM, the Japan Fantastic exhibition presents works by eleven contemporary artists of Japan, many of whom have not exhibited in the United States previously. Working in painting, sculpture, drawing, and video, the artists deal with ideas and images of fantasy. While their works owe a debt to contemporary Japanese manga and anime, these artists go beyond that recent popular phenomenon, taking their works into more personal visions that draw on and often combine elements of history and everyday culture of Japan, blending the conscious and the unconscious, dreams and reality, memory and illusion. The Contemporary Museum is very pleased that the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu has endorsed this exhibition.
